The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
