Prime Television Choices: Seven Can't-Miss Movies This Coming Week

Top Selection

The Substance

Director Coralie Fargeat's bold critique tackles the demanding standards for feminine aesthetics as well as the perceived horrors of growing older. Hollywood star Demi Moore offers a brilliant performance in the role of Elisabeth, a 50-year-old actress forced into starring in an aerobics show on television. Pushed out by her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a mysterious and horrifying treatment titled "The Substance". This creates a younger clone named Sue, culminating in a steadily more vampiric relationship among both women. This Friday, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This suspenseful mystery stars Knightley in the role of Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for a break from reporting on world issues to embark on a high-end voyage alongside a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and philanthropist, her partner, and other filthy rich guests. Yet once a mysterious woman falls into the sea during the evening and everyone claims she was never there, her journalistic curiosity take over. Available now, Netflix

Presence Film

The acclaimed director pushes his directorial skills with this innovative paranormal narrative captured wholly from the viewpoint of the spirit. After a clan including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe settles into their new suburban house, the camera – AKA the Presence – shadows their actions. The daughter appears aware of the supernatural presence, and the entity appears guarding her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, with a twist you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

The iconic actor wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame in this autobiographical spoof. He acts as an egotistical Hollywood actor playing himself who takes on a lucrative offer to attend a festive event at a Mediterranean location for billionaire superfan Javi. Hired by the intelligence agency to gather intel on the alleged criminal, his unconventional method proves useful. Saturday 11 October, evening, the Channel 4 network

This Creepy Thriller

The director's contained scarefest holds up well even without a continuation. Set in 1970s Colorado, several disappearances has left the children on edge. Once Finney is kidnapped by “the Grabber” and held captive in a cellar, he dreads the worst. However, the old telephone mounted nearby repeatedly calls, with ghostly voices offering help, and the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. October 11th, 10.50pm, Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the conflict between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for materialism in this director's brilliantly over-the-top biopic of the disgraced TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield acts as the venal Jim, who proclaims at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye commence monetising the people's spiritual convictions. It's a spectacle of poor styling, bad makeup and bad faith, though the lead actress achieves to present the character in a likable light. October 14th, early morning, the Film4 channel

The Spy Mystery

This week's additional entry by the same director delivers a intelligence thriller as tight as the polo necks used by the actor's British agent. His assignment is with uncovering a mole among the team from a group of five – among them is his spouse. Both actors are masters of understated style, so a delicious mental battle of deception or honesty develops. Additional actors join in the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
