Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
